Lost 176-year-old Charles Dickens's portrait makes his way home

The Charles Dickens Museum will receive a 176-year-old portrait of the famous British author this fall.

The portrait of the artist Margaret Gillies was missing 174 years before it was rediscovered at an auction in South Africa.

In November 2018, the museum launched a fundraiser to raise £ 108,000 to secure the painting.

Cindy Sughrue, director of the Charles Dickens Museum, said:

We are delighted to bring the "lost" portrait home and are extremely grateful and touched by the generous support we receive from individual donors around the world, as well as from our key donors, the Art Fund and the Arts Council England have / V & A Purchase Grant Fund.

The portrait will be exhibited on October 24, 2019 at Charles Dickens Museum, 48 Doughty Street, WC1N 2LX.
